Proceeding contribution from Eric Martlew (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 17 December 2008. It occurred during Ministerial statement on Pitt Report.

Pitt Report

As my right hon. Friend will be aware, there was severe flooding in Carlisle. The flood defences are now being built, however, thanks to the good efforts of my right hon. Friend the Member for Scunthorpe (Mr. Morley), who I see is just leaving the Chamber. Is the Secretary of State sure that the private utilities are prepared and that they have learned the lessons? They had not done so after Carlisle, and there were also problems in the west country with losing water. Furthermore, once the flood defences are built, will my right hon. Friend put pressure on the insurance companies to bring down the premiums in the areas that have been defended?
