Proceeding contribution from Yvette Cooper (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 15 January 2009. It occurred during Ministerial statement on Equitable Life.
Equitable Life
My hon. Friend raises an important point. She is right that the issues involved are complex. Assessing relative losses, and how far policies might have changed simply because of market conditions, raises a series of wider questions. We know that there are many people who hold similar policies with other companies whose policies changed in value, or made losses, in particular periods. So the issues are complex, and we have to take that into account. My hon. Friend also asked what MPs can do. My hon. Friend the Economic Secretary to the Treasury will write to all MPs with updates on what the next steps will be. I know that he will be happy to talk to her about what else MPs could do to take the process forward.
