Proceeding contribution from Lord Lester of Herne Hill (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 14 July 2009. It occurred during Committee of the Whole House (HL) and Debate on bill on Parliamentary Standards Bill.
Parliamentary Standards Bill
I am very grateful. There must be adequate safeguards against abuse; that is all. There must be adequate safeguards of fairness and safeguards against abuse. I agree that the Government have moved towards that and that in some respects the situation is much better than it was. I would trust the noble Lord, Lord Pannick, and the noble and learned Lord, Lord Mackay, to devise a procedure between them. I leave that matter to them and the Government. On that basis, I beg leave to withdraw the amendment. Amendment 49 withdrawn. Amendments 50 to 52 not moved. Amendment 53 had been withdrawn from the Marshalled List.
