I welcome the Minister to his new, enhanced responsibilities in the FCO. Although I am not making any comparisons between the two cases—they are entirely different—in the Michael Shields case the investigations that Merseyside police were able to carry out were crucial in enabling our right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Justice to decide that there was sufficient new evidence to release him. But as my right hon. Friend the Member for Makerfield and my hon. Friend the Member for Bootle have said, that there is no co-operation forthcoming from the French police to Merseyside police. Will my hon. Friend the Minister encourage the French to co-operate fully with Merseyside police to see what help they can give in this situation?
