Proceeding contribution from Lord Hain (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 14 October 2009. It occurred during Debates on delegated legislation on National Assembly for Wales (Legislative Competence) (Welsh Language).

National Assembly for Wales (Legislative Competence) (Welsh Language)

The process of winning the next general election for the Labour party. I think that even the Conservatives—I am answering the question that has been put—understand that they cannot go back to the days of Redwooditis when they trampled willy-nilly over the wishes of Wales and created circumstances in which the No vote of 1979 was converted into the Yes vote, albeit a small one, of 1997. If anybody is responsible for that victory in the 1997 referendum, in which I played a small part, it is the Conservative party, by so alienating Wales that people wanted not only to get rid of them but to establish a Welsh Assembly that could protect them in the event of a Tory Government ever coming to power. Given that the Conservatives have ambitions for Welsh representation in the future and, indeed, made advances at the last election, I think that they would not want to behave in that kind of obstructive way.
