Proceeding contribution from Liam Fox (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 7 July 2010. It occurred during Ministerial statement on Afghanistan.

Afghanistan

I agree with my hon. Friend that dealing with the drugs trade has to be part of the long-term way in which we improve stability, security and governance in Afghanistan. If we are to do that, we must find alternative incomes for some of the poorest people on the planet. Until we can provide alternative incomes for those who are basically subsistence farmers, in many ways, we are unlikely to win hearts and minds and, indeed, the economic case that my hon. Friend so correctly points out.
