Proceeding contribution from Alec Shelbrooke (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Monday, 14 February 2011. It occurred during Debate on bill on Budget Responsibility and National Audit Bill [Lords].

Budget Responsibility and National Audit Bill [Lords]

As the hon. Lady has said, the OBR will indeed stop a Chancellor from saying, ““Growth is going to be this amount, and therefore I will borrow this amount””, while knowing full well that growth might not be so high and he might not be able to repay it. Surely that was the problem in recent years and it is hoped that the OBR will stop such mistakes from being made again.
