Proceeding contribution from Lord Howarth of Newport (Labour) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 29 March 2011. It occurred during Committee of the Whole House (HL) and Debate on bill on Fixed-term Parliaments Bill.

Fixed-term Parliaments Bill

My Lords, if I may say so, that was another worthwhile exchange. It would not be my intention to prevent the possibility of resignation. This clause could be amended fairly easily to incorporate that possibility. One would simply have to say that a parliamentary general election may also take place if the Speaker of the House issues a certificate. Against that background and against the noble and learned Lord’s undertaking to reconsider the specific drafting of the subsection, I beg leave to withdraw this amendment. Amendment 34 withdrawn. House resumed.
