Proceeding contribution from Lord Hammond of Runnymede (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 14 July 2011. It occurred during Ministerial statement on Coastguard Modernisation.

Coastguard Modernisation

I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman, and I also thank him on behalf of my hon. Friend the shipping Minister. It is nice to receive an acknowledgment of some of the effort that goes into getting some of these things right. Of course the proposals are subject to the consultation that I have announced, but we envisage this as a settled situation which deals with the long-running question of how we can modernise the coastguard not just to make it technically resilient, but to create a career structure and, indeed, a pay structure that will solve the deep-rooted and long-running industrial relations problems that have existed in the service.
