Proceeding contribution from Lord Harper (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 8 September 2011. It occurred during Debate on bill on Fixed-term Parliaments Bill.
Fixed-term Parliaments Bill
On this Committee, the Prime Minister will of course be able to consult others. The operation of this Parliament, though, is a matter for this Parliament, so I would not necessarily expect that to take place. I should also correct one thing that was said earlier: we have changed the terms of the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly, but we have not made any changes to the terms of the Northern Ireland Assembly. Those matters were left for consultation between the parties. It is worth putting that on the record. I think I have dealt with the issues I noted down that were raised by Members on both sides of the House. I urge the House to support the motion. Question put. The House divided: Ayes 253, Noes 190.
