National Referendum on the European Union

About halfway through this evening's debate, it might be helpful to remind the House that the motion states:"““That this House calls upon the Government to introduce a Bill in the next session of Parliament to provide for the holding of a national referendum””." Do hon. Members remember national referendums? All three parties promised one in their 2005 election manifestos, and each came up with its unique way of reneging. The motion states that the referendum should be"““on whether the United Kingdom should""(a) remain a member of the European Union on the current terms;""(b) leave the European Union; or""(c) re-negotiate the terms of its membership in order to create a new relationship based on trade and co-operation.””" I must confess that when I first read that, I thought it would be extraordinarily difficult for anyone to disagree with a single word of it, whether they were for or against the EU.
