Syria
The Foreign Secretary cannot be faulted in the handling of this crisis and, if I may say so, his Minister of State, the hon. Member for Taunton Deane (Mr Browne), was very impressive on the BBC yesterday. However, before we go down the road of arming the opposition, should we not recall what happened when the west armed the mujaheddin and they turned into the Taliban and al-Qaeda? More broadly, this is the fourth major intervention in a majority Muslim country—and Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya are not happy examples to follow. Do we not need a broader strategic approach to this region of crisis?
