Proceeding contribution from Lord Hain (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 8 February 2012. It occurred during Grand Committee proceedings (HC) on Agricultural Policy.
Agricultural Policy
I think it is shameful, and I am grateful to my hon. Friend for drawing that to the Committee’s attention. I hope that the Secretary of State will champion the rights of farm workers in that predicament. If the Agricultural Wages Board is abolished, it has been estimated that as much as £9 million annually will be taken out of the rural economy in the UK. According to my simple calculations, that is taking around £450,000 a year out of the Welsh rural economy. Does the Secretary of State care to contradict the £450,000 figure, and will she perhaps give her own? Will she write to me on that matter?
