Proceeding contribution from Mark Williams (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 8 February 2012. It occurred during Grand Committee proceedings (HC) on Agricultural Policy.
Agricultural Policy
I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman. I will come on to that point later. I refer to the answer the Minister of State gave to the question posed by the hon. Member for Llanelli about spreading this work across the United Kingdom as a whole, including areas such as Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, which are heavily livestock intensive. I also want to commend the impressive relationship between those scientists, the vets and the farming industry out there on the field. The fear is that if we lose those testing facilities—retain the post-mortem facilities, but close the laboratories—we will lose that expertise. We heard also, informally, what happened when the labs closed in Bangor. A third of the work transferred satisfactorily to Aberystwyth; a third of the work went off to Shrewsbury but, as a lady I was speaking to put it, a third of the work ““disappeared””. That is particularly alarming.
