Local authority data: Housing supply

This page provides data on housing supply for district-level and unitary local authorities in England. Data is available on housing stock broken down by tenure, net supply of new housing, and supply of affordable housing.

Note on local authorities:  There have been a number of local authority mergers in recent years, with new local authorities created in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023. This page shows data for district and unitary local authorities that existed on 31 March 2024. We have calculated totals for local authorities newly-created in past years by adding together totals for the old district-level local authorities that were merged together to create the new local authority.

Notes

Figures are rounded to the nearest ten for housing stock data. Totals may not sum due to rounding. 

Data is reported by location. This means that some local authority housing in a given local authority may be owned by a different local authority. Likewise, new affordable housing supplied in a local authority may occasionally be sponsored by a different local authority. 

In the net supply data, the 'other' category includes adjustments to past data to account for housing stock totals in the 2021 census, as well as supply through means other than new builds, conversions and change-of-use. 

Figures for Dorset on this page are for the unitary authority of Dorset, created on 1 April 2019, rather than the former county council area of the same name.

We aim to update aspects of this dashboard in line with data releases from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), but the data shown here may not be the latest available. MPs and their staff can contact the Commons Library with queries about updates.
