Sovereign Grant Bill 2026-27

The Sovereign Grant Bill 2026-27 was introduced to the House of Commons on 1 September 2026. It is due to have its second reading followed by all remaining stages on 14 September.

What will the bill do?

The bill makes provision to amend the Sovereign Grant Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”) to enable the annual Sovereign Grant amount to be set at an “appropriate level” in both 2027/28 and beyond.

This delivers on the previous Conservative government’s commitment to “reset” the Grant (which funds the Monarch’s official duties) once the current work to reservice Buckingham Palace comes to an end. The commitment was echoed by the current Labour government in 2025. The bill will therefore set the Grant amount for 2027/28 (£99.9 million) as well as give effect to the new reference percentage of Crown Estate profits (20.5%).

The bill also amends the 2011 Act so that in future the Grant can be reduced from one year to the next, something which is not currently possible other than in specific circumstances. A new power also allows the Treasury to increase the Grant during a financial year in “exceptional circumstances”.

The text of the bill and its Explanatory Notes are provided at the bill pages on the UK Parliamentary website.
