This House of Lords Library Note provides background information to employment figures in the United Kingdom, including how they are defined and some of the economic theories surrounding their levels. The Note also analyses the labour market figures published by the Office for National Statistics on 19 February 2014, and provides a range of information drawn from the Organisation’s data. This includes analysis of labour market statistics by gender and ethnicity, levels of youth employment and the international comparisons published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
