To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether the new franchise for passenger rail services on the East Coast Main Line ensures that the role of the guard is maintained on all trains for the life of the contract.

The Department for Transport has no requirements regarding the role of the guard in the new InterCity East Coast franchise. This will be a matter for the operator.
