Written question asked by Kenny MacAskill on Tuesday, 14 September 2021, in the House of Commons. It was due for an answer on Monday, 20 September 2021 (named day). It was answered by James Heappey (Conservative) on Monday, 20 September 2021 on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.

Mali: Desertion

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what assessment he has made of the desertion rates among Mali’s (a) police and (b) military.

Answer

Desertion rates amongst Mali's defence and security forces were high in late 2019, but subsequently appear to have improved. Given the role of the UK Armed Forces in Mali as part of the UN Mission, there we keep the security situation under regular review.
