Terrorism: Northern Ireland

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if he will take steps to seek compensation for the victims of Libyan-sponsored IRA terrorism.

Answer: The UK Government reiterates its sympathy for UK victims of Qaddafi-sponsored terrorism, and indeed all victims of the Troubles. The UK Government set out its position on Mr Shawcross's report on compensation for UK victims in a Written Ministerial Statement made on 23 March 2021. The responsibility for providing compensation specifically for the actions of the former Qaddafi regime lies with the Libyan State and the UK Government has repeatedly urged the Libyan authorities to engage with UK victims and their representatives, and to address their claims for compensation.
