Rapid Transit Systems: West Yorkshire

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment she has made of the adequacy of the capacity of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to deliver the proposed West Yorkshire mass transit scheme in the context of the time taken for White Rose Station.

Answer

I am clear that it is for the Mayor and the Combined Authority to determine how best to develop and present the case for West Yorkshire Mass Transit (WYMT).

The Government fully supports the Mayor of West Yorkshire’s ambitions to deliver a world-class mass transit system for the region, including plans for a tram network. West Yorkshire Combined Authority has been allocated £830 million through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), alongside future funding from the Transforming Cities Fund. WYCA is responsible for determining how this funding is allocated across its transport priorities, and for the development and delivery of WYMT in line with its Local Assurance Framework and national guidance.

WYMT is the largest infrastructure scheme being developed and delivered by a Mayoral Combined Authority in the UK. Given its scale and complexity, the scheme is retained by Government and the business case is subject to Government approvals to ensure value for money.
