China: Foreign Relations

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if he will publish a readout of his meeting with the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on 23 July 2026.

Answer

During his meeting with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Foreign Secretary stressed the importance of long-term cooperation on global issues, including de-escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and pushing Russia to end their invasion of Ukraine. He also raised the ongoing imprisonment of Jimmy Lai - a matter of the utmost importance to the UK Government. The Government's policy towards China remains consistent and long term, we will cooperate when we can and challenge when we must.
