Defence: Space Technology

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to the answer of 2 September 2026, to question 19175 on Defence: Space Technology, by when he plans to have established the first operational Space Squadron.

Answer

The first operational Space Squadrons have already been established. No.1 Space Operations Squadron and No.2 Space Warning Squadron provide operational space capabilities for Defence, including space domain awareness and missile warning functions.

As set out in the Defence Investment Plan, UK Space Command will continue to evolve its force structure to deliver Defence's space-related roles. Detailed planning is underway to determine the future capability, workforce, infrastructure, and organisational requirements needed to support this ambition. Decisions on the establishment and timing of any additional Space Squadrons have not yet been finalised.
