Written question asked by Saqib Bhatti (Conservative) on Friday, 9 October 2026, in the House of Commons. It was due for an answer on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. It was answered by Georgia Gould (Labour) on Monday, 19 October 2026 on behalf of the Department for Education.

Special Educational Needs: Training

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, how her Department plans to monitor participation in SEND training across primary and secondary settings.

Answer

The department is committed to ensuring that the new special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and inclusion professional development offer supports staff to develop the knowledge and skills they need to meet the needs of children and young people with SEND. As part of SEND reform, the department is proposing to update the SEND Code of Practice with a new requirement for all schools (including primary and secondary) to ensure that their staff receive training on SEND and inclusion.

The department is also investing over £200 million in SEND Continuing Professional Development to support this requirement. The offer includes materials that education settings can use to deliver training in-house, alongside further professional development for teachers, leaders and support staff. The department will monitor engagement with the materials and use the feedback form to help understand how the materials are being used by settings and to inform the continued development of the offer.

Next year, the department will start delivery of new SEND and inclusion courses for teachers, leaders and teaching assistants. The department will use the available registration and participation data to monitor take-up.
