British Council: Finance

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if he will provide a breakdown by grant, programme and purpose of FCDO funding to the British Council in 2026/27.

Answer

The Government has increased funding for the British Council - we have allocated £173 million Grant-in-Aid per year until 2028/29. In addition, we provided a cash injection of £10 million this year (2026/27) via the Spending Review, and a one-off exceptional payment of £15 million last year (2025/26) to support the British Council to restructure its grant-funded operations, in line with its financial turnaround plan. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) funding to the British Council is a matter of public record and can be found in the Annual Report and Accounts 2025/26, here: FCDO_Annual_Report_2025_to_2026.pdf.
