Telecommunications Cables: Seas and Oceans

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what assessment his Department has made of the security of undersea cables and maritime choke points.

Answer

The Ministry of Defence keeps this matter under continual assessment as part of the wider approach to maritime security and the protection of Critical National Infrastructure. The UK works closely with allies and partners to monitor and understand threats to undersea infrastructure and strategically important sea lines of communication.

The Government continues to invest in capabilities to improve our ability to deter, detect and respond to threats in the maritime domain, including up to £330 million of funding to enhance the security and resilience of critical undersea infrastructure.
