Strait of Hormuz: Peacekeeping Operations

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, with reference to his Department’s press release entitled UK to contribute drones, jets and warship to multinational mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz, published on 12 May 2026, what estimate he has made of the duration of the UK’s planned contribution to the multinational mission.

Answer

Under UK and French leadership, over 40 nations are engaged in planning to support maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, with the nature and extent of contributions still being developed.

The UK contribution, including its scale, duration and personnel, remains subject to ongoing operational planning and will be kept under continuous review as part of a conditions-based approach aligned to mission objectives and the evolving context.

For reasons of national and operational security, we do not disclose details of Rules of Engagement, specific force levels, or contributions by other nations.

The safety of the UK Armed Forces personnel is paramount, and risks are assessed and mitigated on a continuous basis in line with standard operational practice.
