Written question asked by Lord West of Spithead (Labour) on Monday, 25 January 2016, in the House of Lords. It was due for an answer on Monday, 8 February 2016. It was answered by Earl Howe (Conservative) on Monday, 1 February 2016 on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.

Astute Class Submarines

Question

To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Answers by Earl Howe on 8 December 2015 (HL4047 and HL4049) and on 19 January (HL4886 and HL4885), what assessment they have made of the costs of the reduction of build time of ASTUTEs.

Answer

The three Astute-Class submarines that have been handed over to the Royal Navy (HMS Astute, HMS Ambush and HMS Artful) were procured as a batch, so it is not possible to give an accurate assessment of the cost variation between these boats.

The National Audit Office's Major Projects Report for 2015 provides the manufacturing cost for all Astute submarines and, for Boats 4-7, explains the variation between each boat.
