NHS: Emergencies

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Health which hospitals are designated as major trauma centres in the event of a major disaster in the UK.

[122530]

Answer

As of April 2012, in NHS England 26 designated major trauma centres (MTCs), shown as follows, now serve the public in the event of major national or regional incidents. They are the hub of regional trauma networks, composed of all the local hospitals and are also linked up to specialist services (such, as burns, spinal cord injury and paediatrics) as required. The whole network would be utilised, including local hospital trauma units, to disseminate patients far more effectively by best matching specialist resources and expertise to patients' needs.
