Unemployment: Young People

Question

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the number of young people unemployed for over a year in financial year 2015-16 according to (a) official claimant count and (b) International Labour Organisation forecasts.

Answer

The Government do not publish unemployment forecasts broken down by age, or duration on benefit. The latest labour market statistics recorded 265,000 16 to 24-year-olds unemployed for over a year, and 73,100 18 to 24-year-olds on the Claimant Count for over a year.

To tackle long-term unemployment, the Government launched the Work programme in June 2011 that will provide personalised support to an expected 3.3 million claimants. The £1 billion Youth Contract will also support up to 500,000 young people into employment and education opportunities.
