The Government's overarching objective for diplomatic and political policy on Italy for 2019 is to develop still further the already deep and broad bilateral relationship. Our delivery will focus on key areas of common interest including: trade and investment; defence, security and foreign policy; cultural engagement, and preparing for the UK-Italy 2020 Year of Culture; tackling transnational crime and terrorism; science and innovation; and education. In delivering this we will harness our already extensive network across the full spectrum of business, governmental and non-governmental bodies, and continue to foster the already strong people-to-people links between Italy and the UK.

The UK Government has discussed Italy’s potential involvement with China’s Belt and Road Initiative at official level with Italian counterparts. As part of our future relationship, the UK is committed to working closely with Italy and other international partners on China.

As part of our bilateral relationship with Italy we regularly discuss asylum policy at Ministerial and official level. The UK Government continues to discuss the issue of asylum with the EU.

As part of our bilateral relationship with Italy we regularly discuss migration issues at ministerial and official level. Sea-Watch 3 disembarked the 47 rescued migrants on board at Catania (Sicily) on 31 January. While the vessel was awaiting permission to disembark, the UK Government both engaged with Italian officials and authorities and, through its local Honorary Consul, contacted the vessel to ensure that the four British nationals amongst the crew knew how to seek consular assistance if required.

Her Majesty's Government has discussed policy towards search and rescue ships in the Mediterranean with the Government of Italy, both bilaterally and in co-operation with EU partners to find a sustainable solution to the issue.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office was not approached to offer assistance to British Nationals who may have been caught up in the coastal floods. We are aware of two British Nationals who were rescued in Sardinia following the flooding there but they did not approach us for any assistance. FCO travel advice was updated on 29 October with information about the severe weather conditions and a link to local guidance being issued by the local authorities.

The British Government is aware of reports of calls for a census of Roma people in Italy. The British Government opposes discrimination in all forms, as well as actions that might damage ethnic and community relations. The Rome people are one of the most disadvantaged minorities, and we support efforts at a European level to encourage Member States to take effective action to improve the situation of their Roma communities. We therefore urge all members of the international community to adhere to international law and human rights standards.

The Government has continued to press the Italian government to end the unacceptable discrimination against the Lettori (UK and foreign lecturers in Italy). The Prime Minister, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Maidenhead (Mrs May) and the Foreign Secretary, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Mr Johnson) raised this issue with their Italian counterparts in July and September.
We have a dedicated consular team that often has to deal with issues of this sort. I will undertake to write to the hon. Lady. If she wants to come to see me and consular officials, I would be happy to arrange such a meeting.

I cannot stop raising this matter until the Martin family from my constituency get the support that they deserve. Their daughter, Claire Martin, died in Italy four and half years ago following multiple stab wounds to her throat. Her last words were “a man”. Her death was recorded as a suicide. Will the new ministerial team reply to my letter and agree to a meeting with the Martins?
