Mr. Amess: To ask the Solicitor-General how many (a) fraud, (b) forgery, (c) gun crime, (d) internet
crime, (e) robbery, (f) snatch theft and (g) alcohol-related violent offence cases the Crown Prosecution
Service has brought in (i) Essex and (ii) England and Wales in each year since 1997; and how many of these resulted in (A)
conviction and (B) acquittal. [210455]
The Solicitor-General: Gun crime, internet crime and alcohol-related violent offences are offences which cannot be separately
identified on the Home Office Court Proceedings Database. Snatch theft is categorised as theft from the person. The table sets out
the relevant figures for the other requested categories. The figures relate to persons for whom these sentences were for the
principal offences for which they were found guilty. When a defendant has been found guilty of two or more offences it is the
offence for which the heaviest penalty is imposed. Where the same disposal is imposed for two or more offences, the offence selected
is the offence for which the statutory maximum penalty is the most severe.
Number of defendants proceeded against at magistrates courts, found guilty at all courts and acquitted at crown courts for various
offences--Essex police force area and England and Wales, 1997 to 2003 1

Andrew Bennett: To ask the Solicitor-General what discussions she has had with the CPS on prosecution policy in respect of forging
signatures on applications to vote by post at the last election. [915]
The Solicitor-General: I have spoken to the Chief Executive of the CPS to discuss current prosecution policy.
The police are responsible for investigating any complaints of forged postal applications to vote. As this is a specialised area of
law, CPS headquarters handle all cases involving breaches of election law referred to the CPS by the police. All cases are reviewed
in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors, to assess the sufficiency of evidence and where appropriate the public interest
in bringing a prosecution.
CPS experience shows that allegations of this kind are received from a number of sources over a period of months. It is still too
early to say whether the increase in postal voting had led to an increase in criminal complaints. In addition, the CPS liaises with
the Electoral Commission as the Commission is required to publish a report on the conduct and administration of the recent general
election.
