Mrs. Calton: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment he has made of the change in the incidence of cancer in each region since the Chernobyl nuclear accident. [171927] Ruth Kelly: The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician. I have asked him to reply. Letter from Len Cook to Mrs. Patsy Calton, dated 12 May 2004: As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question concerning what assessment has made of the incidence of cancer in each region since the Chernobyl nuclear accident. The Chernobyl nuclear accident occurred on 28th April 1986. The attached table gives the incidence of all cancers in England, from 1986 to 2000 (the most recent year for which data are available), by Government Office Region. Changes over time in the number of cancers registered are affected by many factors unrelated to the Chernobyl accident. These include historic change in smoking patterns, increased testing and screening for specific cancers (e.g. prostate, breast, cervix), and improved ascertainment by regional cancer registries. Letter from John Pullinger to Mrs. Calton, dated 5 March 2004: The National Statistician has been asked to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question concerning what assessment his Department has made of the incidence of melanoma by (a) age group and (b) strategic health authority. I am replying in his absence. [157800] The latest year for which figures are available is 2000. The numbers and rates of newly diagnosed cases of melanoma of the skin by age group are published in `Cancer statistics: registrations, England 2000. Series MB1 no.31. (141995) Prior to 1987, the method used for calculating mother's age at conception was not comparable to that used in later years. The data shown in the attached table are for 1987 to 2001, the latest year available. Please note that these data only cover conceptions that led to a maternity (i.e a live or still birth). Conceptions which resulted in miscarriage or termination are not included. Conceptions leading to maternities (numbers and rates), 1987-2001--England and Wales.
