I can only agree with my friend, the hon. Member for Strangford (Jim Shannon), about encouraging people to go into this area of legal aid. There are issues around legal aid more generally, but in this area, police station interviews, police station duty and the right to representation at a...

Will the Minister commit to writing to me, and perhaps placing a copy of the letter in the Library, setting out where the numbers have changed in each region as defined by the areas that are covered in the duty rota schemes?

On the numbers, I want to be clear that the issue is people actively taking cases. One retired solicitor who knew I had secured this debate told me that he still gets an email each year saying that he is still licensed to do stuff, even though he has not...

I agree with the Minister about physical office locations, not least in an era of homeworking. My concern is not so much about the physical local of an office. If firms merge, there is still the potential for conflicts. If there are four firms doing this work in Devon, and...

The Minister is being very generous in inviting interventions. He will know that I sometimes hear with interest the words “in due course”—they are commonly used, and it is amazing what they can cover. Can he give me a flavour of any timelines that have been set for work on...

Operators are paid a fixed management fee, which remains unchanged, plus a variable performance payment which varies according to the performance score awarded to the operator following an independent evaluation.
The independent evaluation will take account of the full range of evidence relevant to the period in question.

The GLAA is the relevant regulatory body for the investigation of unlawful fees being charged in the UK.
UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) in Migration and Borders Group is responsible for the Seasonal Workers Scheme and conduct of the operators. Neither body has jurisdiction over work finding fee offences which may have occurred overseas that do not involve the SWS operators.
Where such matters come to the attention of the GLAA or UKVI they will, where possible, raise such matters with overseas authorities if it is also illegal to charge fees in those jurisdictions.

Settlement in the UK is a privilege, not an automatic entitlement. Anyone not qualifying for settlement, including being unable to pay the fee, is able to apply to extend their permission to stay in the UK.
There is already a fee waiver in place for those making applications to extend their permission to stay in the UK who cannot afford the fee, are destitute, at risk of imminent destitution or where the welfare of a child would be put at risk by payment of the fee.
It is right for users of the immigration system, who benefit directly, to be charged a fee. Although a fee waiver is not available for settlement, it is available for an application for permission to stay in the UK and this arrangement allows an individual to continue with their life in the UK, and even to apply for access to public funds if necessary. They can then apply for settlement once they have saved the necessary funds to pay the application fee.
Income from fees charged plays a vital role in the Home Office’s ability to run a sustainable Migration and Borders system and it is the government’s policy those who use and benefit most from the immigration system should contribute towards the cost of operating the system, reducing reliance on the UK taxpayer. Fees levels and access to fee waivers are reviewed regularly.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment her Department has made of the potential merits of removing fees for priority passport services when individuals have already waited beyond the stated usual service standard time of 10 weeks for their passport application to progress.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what recent assessment she has made of the impact on armed forces families of the £2,404 fee per family member to obtain Indefinite Leave to Remain in the context of the rise in the cost of living.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what recent assessment she has made of the impact on armed forces families of the £2,404 fee per family member to obtain Indefinite Leave to Remain in the context of the rise in the cost of living.
Fees charged for Indefinite Leave to Remain and other immigration products are kept under review. Income from fees charged plays a vital role in the Home Office’s ability to run a sustainable migration and borders system and it is the government’s policy that those who use and benefit most from the immigration system should contribute towards the cost of operating the system, reducing reliance on the UK taxpayer.
The fees and policies which apply to the dependants of HM Forces are closely aligned with those apply to dependents of British citizens and settled persons under the standard family rules. Further support for armed forces families in planning for the cost of visa fees is provided by the Joining Forces Credit Union service.
Some dependants of serving HM Forces may also acquire or be eligible for British citizenship which would negate the need to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain or any other visas.
From 6 April this year, settlement fees for eligible non-UK serving personnel have been waived. This fee waiver will reduce the overall cost to some family units who choose to settle in the UK.

The Government has launched a number of schemes aimed at helping those fleeing from the war in Ukraine. These include the Ukraine Family Scheme, the Homes for Ukraine Scheme and the Ukraine Extension Scheme
Ukrainian nationals who had permission to stay in the UK on or before 18 March 2022, or are in the UK with permission that expired after 1 January 2022, are eligible to apply to the Ukraine Extension Scheme. Those applying under this scheme do not have to pay visa fees.
Those granted permission under any of the Ukraine schemes have access to public funds as well as permission to work and study for up to three years.
We continue to keep the UK Government’s support under review and will adapt and develop the visa routes in place to ensure they keep pace with the situation in Ukraine and the needs of those who have sought sanctuary here.

Visa holders who have paid the immigration health Surcharge (IHS) or who are exempt from payment, are able to access NHS care on broadly the same basis as UK nationals.
The exemptions to payment of the IHS are set out in the Immigration (Health Charge) Order 2015 and include vulnerable categories such as asylum seekers and victims of human trafficking. Migrants who have paid the IHS or are exempt from payment would be able to access maternity care without charge.
People without lawful status or who enter the UK for a period of less than six months are subject to charges for secondary NHS treatment. The decision on whether NHS treatment should be provided is for individual NHS trusts to make, however treatment deemed urgent or necessary such as maternity care is never withheld regardless of an individual’s ability to pay charges.
The Secretary of State for the Home Department talks regularly to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on a range of issues.

We recognise the situation in Afghanistan is complex and presents significant challenges, including securing safe passage to another country.
The government is committed to working in step with the international community and continuing to do what can be done to support those still in Afghanistan who are eligible for resettlement to the UK to depart the country safely if they wish to do so. This includes coordinating with the countries neighbouring Afghanistan.

US nationals are not required to apply for a visa before travelling to visit the UK.
US nationals applying in other visa routes do not need to pay to access a biometric appointment, instead they can use the free service run by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) which is available in 136 locations in the US.
If customers wish to opt for additional priority services, they can use one of the 10 Premium Application Centres (PAC) run by our commercial partner, VFS, in the US to provide an enhanced visa service which comes with an associated fee. The PAC service is entirely optional and a customer’s visa decision will not be impacted if they choose not to use this service.
