The FCO is currently unable to provide a detailed breakdown of all items damaged or destroyed by rioters at the British embassy in Tehran in November 2011. Since visits to Tehran by UK officials recommenced on 3 December 2013—after a gap of two years—it has only been possible to conduct preliminary assessments of the condition of the embassy. A comprehensive assessment of the damage will require a detailed survey by a specialist. Planning is currently under way to conduct this survey as soon as is practical.

The British embassy in Tehran was overrun by a mob on 29 November 2011, resulting in the withdrawal of all embassy staff. I am placing a list of the property damaged in the Library of the House.

The reports are a matter of concern. Details are still emerging but, if confirmed, an Iranian shipment of weapons would be a troubling development for anyone who supports peace and stability in the region.

We have made clear to Iran the need to resolve the question of compensation for the damage caused to our embassy compounds in November 2011. The UK's non-resident Chargé d'Affaires is in discussion with his Iranian counterpart on the matter, as part of our emerging bilateral engagement with Iran.
