The Department allocated 9,600 School Direct (SD) places for training commencing in 2013/14. Early information based on published acceptance data1 indicated that 6,370 applicants had accepted a training place. Allocations are not targets and should not be seen as such—this year as in previous years, we over-allocated initial teacher training places above the numbers of trainees required overall.

The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) holds identifying information on all lead schools allocated School Direct places for the 2013/14 academic year. The NCTL does not hold data on schools within a partnership. One lead school in the Portsmouth South constituency has received an allocation for 2013/14 and other schools in the Portsmouth South constituency may be involved in School Direct through partnership with this lead school or lead schools in other constituencies.

The Department for Education plans to spend around £2.9 million on promotion and advertising to support recruitment to initial teacher training over the next 12 months. This marketing budget is not broken down into core allocation and School Direct routes.

The Government is committed to giving mothers the support and care they need throughout their pregnancy, birth and after birth. Safety and high quality care for mothers are at the heart of maternity services.
As at March 2013, there were 1,368 (6.8%) more midwives in the national health service than in May 2010, and there are 5,000 in training. This will help mothers get the care they want. There were 2,527 student midwife training places available for 2012-13.
The number of qualified midwives for the period 2008 to 2012 is set out in the following table:

The information on training hours is not held centrally in the format requested.
For flying hours, there is no specific number of hours that a student must fly in order to qualify, rather it is a combination of hours flown and objectives achieved. Some pilots will require more flying hours than others to achieve the required standards.
All pilots complete Elementary Flying Training which requires approximately 55 flying hours per student. Follow-on training varies according to aircraft type and typically involves some 220 hours for fast jets (in two stages), 75 hours for multi-engine aircraft and 75-85 hours for helicopters. Additionally pilots undergo operational conversion training before joining front line units. This varies considerably depending on both the specific aircraft concerned and the pilots' progress.
Training does not cease after pilots have completed their formal training but continues throughout their flying careers, because all operational flying includes an element of training.

DFID and Ministry of Defence (MOD) co-operate closely on international humanitarian relief. For example, Royal Air Force Chinook helicopters assisted in delivering humanitarian supplies in Pakistan after the earthquake in 2005 and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Largs Bay assisted in Haiti in 2010. DFID has a memorandum of understanding with the MOD in order to ensure efficient and effective co-operation and employment of assets if the need is identified. We work together in line with internationally agreed humanitarian guidelines.
