Mr. David Marshall: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish for each constituency in Scotland his estimate of the numbers of (a) male and (b) female (i) lone parents, (ii) pensioners, (iii) recipients of DSS benefits and (iv) unemployed persons, (1) under the age of 18 years, (2) aged 18 to 24 years and (3) aged over 24 years. [24037] Mr. Wilson: The numbers of lone parents and pensioners are given in the table. The source is the 1991 Census of Population. Parliamentary constituency level information is not available for all DSS benefits. I have asked my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Security to write supplying the data that are available. The Office for National Statistics measures unemployment using the internationally standard ILO unemployment rate. This is measured through the Labour Force Survey, which is a survey of households in the United Kingdom. This is internationally-agreed and counts as unemployed people who are: (a) without a paid job; (b) available to start work within the next two weeks and (c) have either looked for work in the last four weeks or are waiting to start a job already obtained. ONS also published figures on the number of people who are claiming Jobseeker's Allowance or National Insurance Credits. This is published monthly and is known as the Claimant Count. The information requested can be derived only from the claimant count as the Labour Force Survey does not give detail below local authority district level. This information is available through the Nomis database in the House of Commons Library.
