Letter from Colin Mowl to Mr. Michael Moore, dated 16 November 2004: The National Statistician has been asked to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question what the (a) average and (b) median (i) weekly and (ii) hourly gross earnings (A) including and (B) excluding overtime is of the occupational groups (1) Managers and Senior, (2) Professional, (3) Associate Professional and Technical, (4) Administrative and Secretarial, (5) Skilled Trades, (6) Personal Service, (7) Sales and Customer Service, (8) Process, Plant and Machine Operatives and (9) Elementary, broken down by (x) male, (y) female and (z) all workers. I am replying in his absence. (198286). Average earnings are estimated from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings and are provided for employees on adult rates of pay whose pay was unaffected by absence during the pay period, by their place of work. This is the standard definition used for Annual Survey of Hours and Earning tables. The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings does not collect data on the self employed and people who do unpaid work. These data are available on the statistics web site: http:// www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme labour/ASHE 2004 inc/2004 occupation.pdf We recommend that you use data for full time employees. The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, carried out in April of each year, is the most comprehensive source of earnings information in the United Kingdom. It is a one per cent sample of all employees who are members of pay-as-you-earn schemes, but because of its sampling frame, it has difficulty capturing data on people with very low pay. It is therefore likely to under-represent relatively low paid staff earning below the tax threshold. The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings publication criteria ensures that all estimates are undisclosive. A number of estimates have been removed from the published tables for these reasons.

Letter from Len Cook to Mr. Paul Burstow, dated 11 October 2004: As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking what the average mortality rate for (a) professional groups and (b) manual groups in (i) Hartlepool Primary Care Trust and (ii) England was in the last year for which figures are available. (189266) The most recent available mortality rates for sub-national areas by Social Class, based on occupation, are those which use populations from the 1991 Census. Figures for the period 1991-1993 were published for England and its constituent Government Office Regions (GORs) for males aged .20-64. Figures are not available for smaller geographic areas. Those based on populations from the 2001 Census, and deaths in the years around that Census, are not yet available. Figures for 1991-1993 are included in the table below for England and the North East GOR (which includes the area covered by Hartlepool Primary Care Trust). Letter from Len Cook to Mr. George Osborne, dated 9 February 2004: As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question about economic inactivity. (152932) I regret that this information could only be provided in full at disproportionate cost. However, some of the higher-level information requested is published on the ONS website, or on the Nomis( database, both of which are available via the House of Commons Library. Information about economic inactivity levels by age and sex in each region is published in Table 10 of the Labour Market Statistics Regional First Releases, which can be accessed from the following page on the ONS website: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/ press release/Archive.asp. These estimates, from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), are subject to revisions. LFS estimates published in the Regional First Releases prior to 13 November 2003 are not directly comparable with current data. As with any sample survey, estimates from the LFS are subject to sampling variability. ONS does not publish estimates of economic inactivity rates by age and sex for each region. However, these can be calculated by subtracting the economic activity rate (published in Table 9 of the Regional First Releases) from 100 per cent. For Parliamentary Constituency areas, ONS produces information about economic inactivity rates, but not levels, by age and sex. This information is available on a yearly basis and can be obtained from the Nomis( database.
