Mr. Burstow: To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) if he will make a statement on the numbers of specialists in dermatology; [196239] (2) what the vacancy rates for dermatology specialists were in each strategic health authority in the last year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement. [196247] Mr. Hutton: As at June 2004, there were 425 consultant dermatologists working in the national health service in England. This is an increase of 114, or 37 per cent., since September 1997. Between September 1997 and 2003, the number of dermatologists in the registrar group increased by 42, or 37 per cent. We are also increasing training capacity within the specialty. Between 2002-03 and 2004-05, central funding has been distributed to support the implementation of 27 additional specialist registrar (SpR) posts in dermatology. All the posts have now been implemented. Trusts have also had the opportunity to create up to 40 locally funded SpR training opportunities and the latest survey suggests 23 are due to be implemented so far. The table shows the three-month vacancy rates for consultant dermatologists by strategic health authority (SHA), as at March 2004. The national three-month vacancy rate for dermatology has decreased from 6.1 per cent. in March 2003 to 4.7 per cent. in March 2004. This comes at the same time as increases in the dermatology workforce. [191219] Jane Kennedy: The administration of Jobcentre Plus is a matter for the Chief Executive of Jobcentre Plus, David Anderson. He will write to the hon. Member. Letter from David Anderson to Mr. Hugh Bayley, dated 21 October 2004: The Secretary of State has asked me to reply to your question concerning the number of unfilled job vacancies at York Jobcentre. This is something which falls within the responsibilities delegated to me as Chief Executive of Jobcentre Plus. According to Jobcentre Plus administrative records, the numbers of unfilled vacancies at York Jobcentre between 1996 and 2000 are set out in the table below. This represents only a proportion of all the vacancies available, as not all vacancies are notified to Jobcentres. Unfilled vacancies recorded at York Jobcentre between 1996 and 2000 _________________________________________________________________________________________________. From 2001, the publication of Jobcentre Plus vacancy statistics was deferred due to distortions in the data. These arose partly from difficulties with a new computer system and partly from the introduction of innovative vacancy-taking procedures, such as the creation of Employer Direct Contact Centres, which made it difficult to interpret changes in the figures. Published data on the number of unfilled Jobcentre Plus vacancies remains suspended and at present is not suitable for use as a labour market indicator. We are currently reviewing the derivation and composition of the data. We are working closely with colleagues in the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to reinstate data that will be suitable for public use. The figures in the table below show management information on numbers of unfilled vacancies at the now Jobcentre Plus office from August 2001 to August 2004. Figures are not comparable to the National Statistics series shown above and should not be interpreted as reflecting changes to labour market conditions over the period from 1996. These figures may also be higher, as the catchment area for vacancy recording has widened reflecting broader travel to work patterns.
