To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they will consider establishing a decoration or medal for distinguished service by military or intelligence personnel who took part in active service in the Cold War between 1951 and 1990.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they will consider establishing a decoration or medal for distinguished service by military or intelligence personnel who took part in active service in the Cold War between 1951 and 1990.
It is clear that the professionalism and resolve of British and NATO forces during the Cold War years was an important factor that contributed to the collapse of the Warsaw Pact military alliance. However, it is widely recognised that this was achieved without recourse to the type of military activity for which campaign medals are generally instituted and there are no plans to introduce such an award. However, individual meritorious service or acts of bravery could be recognised through the usual UK State Honours system.
Many people leave the British Armed Forces without having been eligible for a campaign service medal. This position does not lessen our appreciation for the courage shown and sacrifices made by all our brave personnel during their Service.

The viability of awarding firefighters for service beyond the existing 20 years is currently being investigated by my Department. There are processes which need to be followed prior to discussion with the Honours and Decorations Committee taking place but officials are progressing the issue and will be in touch with the Committee in due course.
The number of medals awarded to firefighters in each of the last five year are as follows:
2010 - 1,737
2011 - 1,465
2012 - 1,011
2013 - 1,246
2014 - 1,147
These figures do not include Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, if he will ensure that women who worked in munitions factories during World War Two receive a medal to mark their contribution to the war effort.
The Government fully appreciates the efforts and the often very dangerous conditions experienced by those who worked in munitions factories producing vital equipment for the armed forces that helped contribute to winning the Second World War.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has given careful consideration to possible formal recognition of the enormous contribution made by all those who manufactured munitions during the War. Given the disruption to employment in the War years and the time elapsed since, it would unfortunately be very difficult to identify all those involved. Many of companies no longer exist and the consequent lack of records for those they employed means that there would be difficulties in verifying any entitlement. It was concluded that it would not be practical to find a way to recognise the contributions of individual workers. However we are aware that an All Party Parliamentary Group on Recognition for Munitions Workers has been set up to explore ways to recognise the collective efforts of those who worked in munitions factories and we are open to working with them on any recommendations they bring forward.

Our Armed Forces are playing a significant role, in the fight against the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The risk and rigor being faced by our Service personnel in the region is unique, and the situation is kept under review by the Operational Review Board. Officials are currently examining the issue of medallic recognition for those who have deployed.

Although work continues to determine how to implement the recommendations of Sir John Holmes' independent Military Medals Review, it has already been decided that the Long Service and Good Conduct medal will not be awarded retrospectively to retired officers. A significant factor in this decision is the difficulty which would be encountered in gaining access to the records of all those who have left the Armed Forces when considering eligibility.

On 1 October 2014 the Secretary of State for Defence announced that he would like to see a Reserve Long Service medal that allows the use of post-nominals for all ranks. He has asked officials to investigate options to deliver this under the current UK Honours and Awards system, with an instruction to report back to him by the end of the year. I can confirm that this work is under way.
