To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to Answer of 17 January 2019 to Question 208357, for what reasons his Department delayed the closure of the HMRC office in Peterlee.
HMRC has decided to keep its office in Peterlee, Emerald Court, open until 2022-23 in order to respond to changing priorities.
HMRC now expects that there will be more people in the Department in 2021 than it anticipated when its location plans were originally announced in 2015. This is due to the recruitment of people into Customer Services, extra staff to support new compliance work, the need for more operational staff to support EU Exit work and the change to the Department for Work and Pensions’ approach to rolling out Universal Credit, all resulting in more staff staying with HMRC.
There are no current plans to retain any more other offices for longer, other than those which HMRC had previously announced.

DWP does not pass comment on physical security arrangements and vulnerabilities at any individual site. I can however advise that on every site, such security arrangements, including those for the protection of data held about our customers and their business, are subject to regular review and validation. DWP has been successfully conducting the vast majority of its business with customers in an open-plan environment for many years, and that is one of the many factors that feed into the design of appropriate security control measures for each location.

DWP treats the safety of employees and individuals on its premises as paramount and therefore will not publish any Physical Security Survey in case this led to exposure of identified security vulnerabilities at a particular site; which in turn could be exploited to the detriment of DWP staff, individuals visiting the premises, and delivery of services to customers

Highways England currently has a £15m programme to roll out rapid chargepoints at least every 20 miles along 95% of the strategic road network. As part of the Autumn Statement 2016, a further £80m was made available for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The Government intends to set out its plans for this funding as part of the Zero Emission Road Transport Strategy due to be published by March 2018.
