To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, whether her Department has had discussions with UK Sport and the British Olympic Association on the process for reviewing medal allocations in cases where athletes were retrospectively found to be ineligible under World Athletics regulations.

Any such representations on this topic would be for the relevant governing body to make, as the domestic member of the international federation.
To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, whether her Department has had discussions with the International Olympic Committee on the potential merits of providing retrospective recognition or medal reallocation in cases where athletes competed against people who would not meet eligibility criteria under current rules.

May I take this opportunity to welcome the two new Front-Bench teams? I do not know whether my hon. Friends on the Opposition Front Bench are as surprised to see them there as I am. None the less, will the Secretary of State join me in congratulating UK Sport on its successful Olympics? Team GB won more gold medals in more sports than any other country and came second in the table, but there is still an issue with team sports. There is more work to be done in sports such as basketball, possibly handball and others. Will she therefore join me in congratulating UK Sport but also urge it to do more work on team sports?

I am incredibly proud of all the achievements in all our sports, but I have to take the hon. Gentleman up on his comment about team sports. I was at the women’s hockey semi-final. There is no doubt that the women’s hockey team is one of the greatest teams we have and we should all congratulate them on their gold medal success.

That this House notes that is is normal practice for senior civil servants and members of the Royal household to be awarded honours, frequently knighthoods, on reaching an approved or appointed position; is saddened at the lack of empathy within the Honours Committee towards sport, especially in the way in which honours have been awarded over the past three decades to sporting heroes; recalls that the 1988 Great Britain gold medal hockey team were not awarded collective honours although the 2003 England world champion rugby union squad was; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to press for all UK Olympic and Paralympic medallists from the Athens 2004 Games to receive appropriate honours, including knighthoods, in the next New Year's honours list.

That this House believes that Scottish skier and British bronze medallist Alain Baxter should not have had his medal revoked by the International Olympic Committee, and while deploring misuse of drugs in sport has absolutely no reason to doubt Mr Baxter's explanation that the methamphetamine substance entered his system through the totally innocent means of a US Vicks Vapor Inhaler; notes news reports that a letter from the testing laboratory said that the level of methamphetamine was so little that it could not have enhanced Mr Baxter's performance; regrets that the IOC did not take a more lenient view of this case; expresses its hope that Mr Baxter will not be banned from future sporting events; and further believes that Alain Baxter has behaved with dignity throughout this difficult period and remains a strong sporting role model for youngsters in Scotland and throughout the United Kingdom.
