Mr. William Ross: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many police officers in Northern Ireland have been injured on duty in each of the last 24 months, indicating in each case if the injuries were (a) accidental and (b) the result of assault by (i) Republican, (ii) Loyalist, and (iii) other persons. [159470] Mr. Ingram: The table shows the number of police officers in the Royal Ulster Constabulary injured on duty over the period 1 April 1999 to 28 February 2001 (the latest date for which information is available). Information on whether injuries were accidental or the result of Republican, Loyalist or other assault is not readily available and could be provided only at a disproportionate cost. However, a breakdown has been provided on injuries as a result of the security situation. However, the Police Ombudsman assumed responsibility for 2,396 cases under transitional arrangements from the Independent Commission for Police Complaints. Of these, five cases have resulted in disciplinary proceedings being taken and a total of 250 cases have been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr. William Ross: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will publish a table in the Official Report to show how many (a) inquiries were made about joining the RUC and (b) applications were received for each intake to the RUC broken down by gender; and what was the (i) gender and (ii) religious breakdown of each intake in each of the last five years. [156585] Mr. Ingram: The tables show the breakdown of applications for recruitment to the Royal Ulster Constabulary from 1996 to the last recruitment campaign in December 1998 and the corresponding number of successful applicants. The total number of inquiries received for each campaign are not available.
