That this House congratulates the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) on its groundbreaking Freedom from Fear campaign, which seeks to prevent violence, threats and abuse against shopworkers; welcomes the Government's continued investment in policing and community safety, which has led to a 35 per cent. decrease in crime; further welcomes the Government's commitment to using a range of measures to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, such as anti-social behaviour orders, acceptable behaviour contracts, closed circuit television and neighbourhood policing; is concerned that there is too much onus on the individual shopworker to police the sale of age-restricted goods; is further concerned that some of the prosecuting authorities do not understand the difficult job shopworkers have policing age-related sales; notes that age-related sales are a major cause of incidents of violence, threats and abuse against shopworkers; calls on the Government to redress the balance by working with retailers to run a high profile campaign, ensuring that young people know that it is an offence to attempt to buy alcohol under-age; further calls on the Government to review the law and extend the attempting to buy offence to all age-restricted products; and further calls on hon. Members to support Usdaw's Respect for Shopworkers Week on 3rd to 7th November, which asks customers to `keep your cool at Christmas'; and urges all hon. Members to help retailers and their staff to call upon the support of local police and of anti-social behaviour units to tackle violent offenders and persistent abusers.

That this House cherishes the importance of Sundays as a collective day of rest and worship and as a day for families to spend together; believes that deregulation of Sunday trading would have a detrimental impact on Britain's 2.7 million shopworkers, on the police, security, banking, distribution, transport, health and catering staff who also have to work when shops are open, on the children and families of all these staff and on the communities around large stores which already suffer congestion and noise for six and a half days a week; welcomes the NOP poll that shows that 62 per cent. of the public do not want any extension of the current six hours of Sunday opening by large stores; agrees with the public that 150 hours per week is enough for anyone to do their shopping; and believes that any extension of Sunday trading hours of large stores would have a serious impact on neighbourhood and community stores and would lead to job losses in this sector and a deterioration in local services.

That this House congratulates the 100,000 people who accessed learning at work last year via their trade union learning representative, and the union learning representatives who do such a valuable job in assisting them; further congratulates the Labour Government for the extension of the Union Learning Fund which is providing excellent value for money by enabling unions to reach out to those most in need of acquiring skills; and calls on the Government to investigate ways in which union learning representatives can do more to help people with low level skills, particularly in those companies which refuse to work with union learning representatives, by looking to make statutory provision for workplace learning committees to ensure that employers work with union learning representatives in a similar way in which they work with Health and Safety Representatives on statutory Health and Safety Committees.
