That this House condemns the proposals by the Department of Transport in relation to the M62 relief road; salutes the efforts of WARR and other anti-motorway campaign groups in Greater Manchester to oppose such proposals; and recognises the determination of the residents of Bury South to put aside political and other differences in their demand that such proposals should be withdrawn as part of a careful evaluation of the transport needs of the British people, which would avoid more concrete jungles, housing and planning blight and environmental pollution.

That this House condemns the proposed M62 Relief Road which involves the demolition of over 350 homes and the creation of widespread planning blight in the Whitefield part of the Bury South constituency; believes that other alternatives to the proposals should be considered and that the devastating effect on the lives and environment of those affected is too high a price to pay; and calls upon the Department of Transport to withdraw the proposals forthwith.

That this House notes that a democratic general election will take place in the state of Israel on 23rd June; congratulates the Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel on the strength of their democracy; hopes that democracy will take root in all the other nations of the Middle East; wishes all the participants well in the current peace talks between Israel, the neighbouring Arab states and Palestinian representatives from the West Bank and Gaza Strip; believes that these negotiations represent the best chance for peace in the history of the Arab-Israel conflict; and looks forward to the day when all states in the region can live in peace on the basis of secure and internationally agreed borders.
