Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Michael Latham (Conservative), on Monday, 16 December 1991, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 5 members in total.
HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT OF THE SYRIAN ARAB REPUBLIC
That this House notes with interest the re-election of President Hafez Al-Assad in an election in which he was unopposed and 6,727,992 citizens voted, being 99.14 per cent. of the electorate; notes that he received 6,726,843 votes, being 99.98 per cent. of the poll, with 396 votes against him and 753 spoilt papers; and hopes that the Syrian propaganda machine will hesitate before it lectures the West or Israel about democracy or liberty.
