That this House is alarmed at the shocking news from Jaguar Land Rover that 500 jobs are to go at its Halewood plant as it moves from a three shift system to a two shift system; notes that there will be a knock on effect in the supply chain; is concerned that ongoing uncertainty about Brexit and our future trading relationships with the EU will mean that there are more job losses to come in the North West auto industry; and calls on the Government to provide support to ensure the ongoing viability of the North West car manufacturing industry during this period of uncertainty.

That this House welcomes the launch of the Tyred campaign; recognises the outstanding work that Frances Molloy, mother of Michael Molloy, and the parents of Kerry Ogden have done to highlight the dangers of ageing tyres on public service vehicles; notes the tragic deaths of Michael Molloy, Kerry Ogden and Colin Daulby in September 2012 following an avoidable coach crash caused by a defective front tyre; acknowledges the inquest verdict that the cause of the crash was the age of the tyre; further acknowledges the coroner's verdict that tyres deteriorate significantly with age; further recognises that in the interests of passenger safety, tyres exceeding 10 years old should not be used on public service vehicles; accepts that compliance with Government guidelines published in December 2013, that advises operators against the use of tyres exceeding 10 years of age, is not guaranteed without legislation; recognises that a change in the law to ban the use of tyres over the age of 10 years is urgently required; and believes that the Government should take steps to ensure the use of tyres exceeding the age of 10 years on public service vehicles is prohibited under UK law.

That this House welcomes recent Department for Transport statistics which show that the number of people killedin road accidents fell by 16 per cent. from 2,222 in 2009 to 1,857 in 2010; notes that this is the lowest figure since national records began in 1926; believes that the annual MOT test plays an important role in ensuring Britain's roads are among the safest in the world; is opposed to any move to reduce the frequency of MOT tests which can only have the effect of increasing the number of defective and unsafe vehicles on the road, increasing accidents and deaths and increasing insurance premiums and the cost of repairs for the law-abiding motorist; and calls on the Government to rule out any weakening of the MOT system as part of its forthcoming review.

That this House condemns the ignorance and prejudice displayed by the honourable Member for Aldershot in remarks he made recently which are an insult to Liverpool and its people and business community and which discourage employers from investing in Liverpool and blame Liverpool people for the high levels of unemployment they suffer; and believes that instead of displaying the unthinking prejudice for which the Thatcherite wing of the Tory Party is well known, he should visit Liverpool where he can see for himself that the city and its people, in partnership with the business community, are creating new jobs and equipping local people to take the opportunities created.
