As part of our NATO First approach to deterrence and defence, we are committed to strengthening NATO’s nuclear mission and ensuring the Alliance’s posture remains fit for purpose across the entire spectrum of conflict.

The upgraded Typhoon fleet will operate alongside the F-35 Lightning as complementary elements of the UK’s combat air force. The Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programme will augment and enhance the effects of crewed aircraft across a range of air power roles with an initial focus on combat air. The delivery profile and date of F-35A aircraft is subject to negotiation between the UK and multinational Joint Program Office, but the UK anticipates taking delivery of the next batch of F-35 aircraft from the early 2030s. This will include 12 F-35As, which will allow the UK to join NATO’s Dual Capable Aircraft (DCA) mission.
We will continue to work closely with the US, whose nuclear weapons are allocated to the NATO DCA mission, and our other NATO Allies on the timeline for doing so.

The Ministry of Defence has approved the purchase of the GBU-53 Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB-II) as an interim stand-off weapon for the F-35B, intended to bridge the capability gap until the UK-developed SPEAR 3 enters full operational service. This decision reflects both cost and availability considerations, with SDB-II offering a cost-effective and readily integrated solution in the near term. This also addresses a capability gap we inherited from the last administration.
The core distinction between the two systems lies in their design and performance characteristics. SDB-II is an unpowered glide bomb that relies on release altitude and aircraft speed to achieve its range, making it an effective weapon that operates differently from powered systems. In contrast, SPEAR 3 incorporates a turbojet engine to function as a miniature cruise missile. This propulsion enables sustained flight, greater stand-off range, and increased flexibility in engagement profiles.
Operationally, the enhanced range and low-altitude launch capability of SPEAR 3 provides a substantial tactical advantage. It will allow F-35B aircraft to prosecute targets from much greater distances while remaining outside the effective engagement envelopes of sophisticated enemy air defence systems, particularly within contested anti-access/area-denial environments. This reduces risk to both aircraft and crew, while also improving mission survivability and overall effectiveness in high-threat scenarios.
