The Ministry of Defence has approved the purchase of the GBU-53 Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB-II) as an interim stand-off weapon for the F-35B, intended to bridge the capability gap until the UK-developed SPEAR 3 enters full operational service. This decision reflects both cost and availability considerations, with SDB-II offering a cost-effective and readily integrated solution in the near term. This also addresses a capability gap we inherited from the last administration.

The core distinction between the two systems lies in their design and performance characteristics. SDB-II is an unpowered glide bomb that relies on release altitude and aircraft speed to achieve its range, making it an effective weapon that operates differently from powered systems. In contrast, SPEAR 3 incorporates a turbojet engine to function as a miniature cruise missile. This propulsion enables sustained flight, greater stand-off range, and increased flexibility in engagement profiles.

Operationally, the enhanced range and low-altitude launch capability of SPEAR 3 provides a substantial tactical advantage. It will allow F-35B aircraft to prosecute targets from much greater distances while remaining outside the effective engagement envelopes of sophisticated enemy air defence systems, particularly within contested anti-access/area-denial environments. This reduces risk to both aircraft and crew, while also improving mission survivability and overall effectiveness in high-threat scenarios.
