That this House congratulates the members of the Graphical, Paper and Media Union (GPMU) on voting to retain their political fund; recognises the numerous workplace campaigns that had been taken into the political arena by the GPMU and had achieved real results; notes that the GPMU is the second TUCC affiliate to hold a political fund review ballot in this current series of ballots; agrees with GPMU National Officer Mike Griffiths that repeatedly balloting members on the political fund is a waste of union time and money; and urges the Government to abolish the need to re-ballot after a union had successfully balloted three times in favour of the continuation of their political fund.

That this House notes that Morgan Grampian plc has a long history of good relations with the NUJ and GPMU; acknowledges the co-operation of the trades unions in enabling the company to reach sound agreements on the utilisation of new technology in advance of other major magazine publishers; deplores the recent decision by the company to terminate the house agreement which both unions held with the company and the withdrawal of formal recognition; is concerned that the local management has refused to meet the unions to discuss the issue; calls upon Lord Stevens, Chairman of United Newspapers, to meet John Foster and Tony Dubbins, general secretaries, respectively, of the NUJ and GPMU; and expresses its support for both chapels at Morgan Grampian in the present dispute.

That this House condemns the decision of Midland Newspapers, owned by Reed International, announced on Wednesday 12th February, to derecognise the print union GPMU and the National Union of Journalists at the Birmingham Metro News, Worcester Evening News, Hereford Times, Redditch Advertiser, Bromsgrove Advertiser, Stourbridge News, Dudley News, Halesowen News, Wolverhampton Adnews, Chase Post, Worcester Journal, Malvern Gazette, Evesham Journal, Ledbury Reporter, Alcester Chronicle, Droitwich Advertiser, Cotswold Journal, Ludlow Advertiser, Tenbury Wells Advertiser, Evesham Admag and Stratford Journal; is dismayed at management's insistence that there be no collective bargaining over pay, and that working hours could be arbitrarily altered; recognises that this is but the latest attack on unions in the print industry and is a clear withdrawal of human rights; and fully supports the campaign of the NUJ to encourage fellow trades unionists to tell the company they no longer want these papers, most of which are free, delivered.
